Inpatient Rehab at Keystone Health Group
Our residential inpatient program provides 24/7 structured care in a safe, supportive environment — combining evidence-based therapy, peer community, and individualized treatment planning for lasting recovery.
What Is Inpatient Rehab?
Inpatient rehabilitation — also called residential treatment — is the most intensive level of addiction care available outside of a hospital setting. Clients live at the treatment facility for the duration of their program, typically 30 to 90 days, and receive structured therapeutic programming throughout each day.
Unlike outpatient programs, inpatient rehab removes clients from their home environment — and the triggers, stressors, and enabling relationships that often exist there — and places them in a focused, distraction-free setting where recovery can become the singular priority.
At Keystone Health Group, our inpatient program is delivered at Sunset Haven Drug, Alcohol & Mental Health Rehab in Los Angeles. Clients who require medical detox first complete that process at our Balance Point Detox and Recovery facility in Encino, then transition seamlessly into residential care at Sunset Haven.
A Complete Program for Lasting Recovery
Every element of our inpatient program is designed to address the full complexity of addiction — physical, psychological, and social.
Medically Supervised Care
Board-certified addiction medicine physicians and licensed nursing staff provide 24/7 medical oversight throughout your stay, ensuring your safety and comfort at every stage of treatment.
Individualized Treatment Plans
No two people experience addiction the same way. Your clinical team will develop a personalized treatment plan based on your specific history, co-occurring conditions, and recovery goals.
Peer Community & Group Therapy
Research consistently shows that peer relationships during treatment are among the strongest predictors of long-term sobriety. Our group therapy model harnesses shared experience as a therapeutic tool.
Evidence-Based Therapies
We integrate Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET), and 12-Step facilitation into a cohesive, structured program.
Structured Daily Schedule
A predictable, structured daily routine is itself therapeutic. From morning check-ins to evening reflection groups, every hour of your day is purposefully designed to support recovery.
Aftercare & Discharge Planning
Recovery doesn't end when you leave. Your clinical team begins discharge planning from day one, ensuring a seamless transition to outpatient care, sober living, or alumni support.
What to Expect During Treatment
We believe you deserve to know exactly what you're stepping into. Here's a week-by-week overview of a typical 30-day inpatient stay.
Arrival & Medical Intake
You are welcomed by a member of our clinical team who guides you through a comprehensive medical evaluation, clinical intake assessment, and facility orientation. By the end of your first day, you will have a personalized treatment plan and a clear picture of what the coming weeks will look like.
Stabilization & Foundation
The first week focuses on physical and emotional stabilization. You will begin individual therapy sessions, join daily group therapy, and start building relationships with peers and staff. For clients who have recently completed detox, this week bridges the gap between physical withdrawal and active therapeutic work.
Core Therapeutic Work
The heart of the inpatient program. You will engage in intensive individual therapy, skills-based group sessions, family therapy (if applicable), and specialized programming for co-occurring mental health conditions. This is where the deeper work of understanding addiction and building new coping strategies takes place.
Integration & Discharge Planning
As your stay concludes, the focus shifts to integrating what you have learned and preparing for life after residential care. Your team will finalize your aftercare plan, connect you with outpatient resources, and ensure you leave with a clear roadmap for continued recovery.
Therapies Used in Our Inpatient Program
Our clinical team draws from a comprehensive toolkit of evidence-based therapeutic modalities, tailoring the combination to each client's individual needs and treatment goals.
Ask About Our TherapiesWho Is Inpatient Rehab Recommended For?
Inpatient rehab is the highest level of non-hospital addiction care and is typically recommended when outpatient treatment is not sufficient to support recovery. Our clinical team conducts a free assessment to help determine the appropriate level of care for your situation.
Get a Free AssessmentModerate to Severe Addiction
Individuals with a long history of substance use, physical dependence, or prior failed attempts at outpatient treatment typically require the structure and intensity of inpatient care.
Co-Occurring Mental Health Conditions
When addiction is accompanied by depression, anxiety, PTSD, bipolar disorder, or other mental health conditions, inpatient care allows both issues to be treated simultaneously by a multidisciplinary team.
Unsafe or Unsupportive Home Environment
If your home environment includes active substance users, high stress, or other triggers that would undermine early recovery, removing yourself from that environment is often essential.
Need for Medical Supervision
Withdrawal from alcohol, benzodiazepines, and opioids can be medically dangerous. Inpatient care — beginning with medical detox — ensures your safety during the most vulnerable phase of recovery.
Treating Addiction and Mental Health Together
More than 50% of people with a substance use disorder also have a co-occurring mental health condition. When these conditions are treated separately — or when the mental health component is ignored entirely — the risk of relapse increases dramatically.
Our inpatient program is fully dual-diagnosis capable. Our clinical team includes licensed psychiatrists, psychologists, and addiction medicine specialists who work together to address both conditions simultaneously within a single, integrated treatment plan.
Learn About Dual-Diagnosis TreatmentMost Insurance Plans Cover Inpatient Rehab
Under the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act (MHPAEA), most major insurance plans are required to cover substance use disorder treatment at the same level as other medical conditions. Our admissions team will verify your specific benefits before you arrive — at no cost to you.
We are in-network with Aetna, Anthem, Cigna, United Healthcare, Humana, Magellan, Optum, and Tricare/VA. Self-pay and financing options are also available.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does inpatient rehab last?
The length of inpatient treatment varies based on individual clinical need. Most clients complete a 30-day program, though 60- and 90-day stays are available and often recommended for more complex cases involving long-term addiction, co-occurring mental health disorders, or previous treatment attempts. Your clinical team will recommend the appropriate length of stay based on your assessment.
What is the difference between inpatient rehab and detox?
Medical detox is the process of safely managing withdrawal from substances under medical supervision. It typically lasts 5–10 days and addresses the physical dependence on a substance. Inpatient rehab begins after detox and focuses on the psychological, behavioral, and social dimensions of addiction through intensive therapy and structured programming. Many clients complete detox at Balance Point and then transition directly into inpatient rehab at Sunset Haven.
Can I use my phone or contact family during inpatient rehab?
During the first few days of treatment, we ask clients to limit phone use to allow for full immersion in the therapeutic process. After the initial stabilization period, clients are typically permitted to use their phones during designated times. Family contact is encouraged throughout treatment, and we offer family therapy sessions and a dedicated family liaison.
Will my insurance cover inpatient rehab?
Most major insurance plans — including Aetna, Cigna, Anthem, United Healthcare, Humana, and others — provide coverage for inpatient substance use treatment under the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act. Our admissions team will verify your specific benefits before you arrive so there are no surprises. Self-pay and financing options are also available.
What should I bring to inpatient rehab?
We recommend comfortable, casual clothing for 30+ days, personal hygiene items (no alcohol-based products), any prescription medications in their original bottles, a journal, and any books or reading materials. We will provide a complete packing list when your admission is confirmed. Leave valuables, large amounts of cash, and any substances at home.
Is inpatient rehab the right level of care for me?
Inpatient rehab is typically recommended for individuals with moderate-to-severe substance use disorder, those who have not succeeded with outpatient treatment, those with co-occurring mental health conditions, or those whose home environment is not conducive to early recovery. Our admissions team will conduct a free clinical assessment to help determine the most appropriate level of care for your situation.
