Family Therapy for
Addiction Recovery
Addiction affects the entire family system. At Keystone Health Group, family therapy is an integral part of our treatment program — healing relationships, rebuilding trust, and creating a home environment that supports lasting recovery.
Why Family Therapy Matters in Addiction Treatment
Addiction is often described as a family disease — not because family members are responsible for a loved one's addiction, but because addiction profoundly affects the entire family system. Family members develop their own patterns of coping — enabling, caretaking, avoiding, or withdrawing — that can inadvertently sustain the addiction and create lasting damage to relationships.
Family therapy at Keystone Health Group addresses these dynamics directly. Research consistently shows that involving family members in addiction treatment significantly improves outcomes — for the person in treatment and for the family as a whole.
What Family Therapy Addresses
Our Family Therapy Approaches
Behavioral Family Therapy (BFT)
BFT focuses on improving communication and problem-solving skills within the family, identifying and changing behaviors that sustain addiction, and building a home environment that supports recovery. It is one of the most evidence-based approaches for family involvement in addiction treatment.
Multidimensional Family Therapy (MDFT)
MDFT is a comprehensive, evidence-based approach that addresses addiction within the context of the family system, peer relationships, and broader social environment. It is particularly effective for adolescents and young adults.
Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT)
CRAFT is an evidence-based approach for family members of people who are not yet in treatment. It teaches family members how to use positive reinforcement to motivate their loved one to seek treatment, while also improving the family member's own quality of life.
Al-Anon and Nar-Anon Facilitation
Our clinical team facilitates connection to Al-Anon and Nar-Anon — peer support programs for family members of people with addiction — as a complement to formal family therapy.
