Individual (One-on-One) Therapy for Addiction
The role of individualized, one-on-one therapy in addiction treatment at Keystone Health Group in Los Angeles.
Individual therapy — one-on-one sessions between a client and a licensed therapist — is the cornerstone of addiction treatment at Keystone Health Group. While group therapy provides peer connection and shared experience, individual therapy provides a private, confidential space to explore the personal history, trauma, mental health conditions, and relationship patterns that underlie addiction. Our therapists are licensed clinical social workers (LCSWs), licensed professional counselors (LPCs), and licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs) with specialized training in addiction treatment.
What Happens in Individual Therapy
Individual therapy sessions are tailored to each client's specific needs, history, and treatment goals. Sessions may address: the personal history and experiences that contributed to addiction; co-occurring mental health conditions; trauma processing; relationship patterns and family dynamics; life skills and coping strategies; relapse prevention planning; and aftercare planning. The therapeutic relationship itself — the trust, safety, and collaboration between client and therapist — is a powerful agent of change.
Therapeutic Modalities Used
Our therapists draw on a range of evidence-based therapeutic modalities, selecting the approach most appropriate for each client: CBT for thought and behavior change; DBT for emotional dysregulation; EMDR for trauma processing; motivational interviewing for ambivalence; psychodynamic therapy for exploring underlying patterns; and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) for values-based change.
Frequency and Duration
In our inpatient program, clients typically receive individual therapy sessions multiple times per week. The frequency and duration of individual therapy in aftercare is determined by clinical need and insurance coverage.
