Recognizing the Signs, Responding Effectively, and Finding Lasting Recovery at Keystone Health Group
Understanding Alcohol Overdose
An overdose occurs when a person takes more of a substance than their body can safely process, leading to potentially life-threatening toxic effects. Alcohol overdoses can happen to anyone, whether they are using a substance for the first time or have been using it for years. Changes in tolerance, variations in substance potency, and the presence of adulterants like fentanyl all increase the risk of accidental overdose.
At Keystone Health Group, we understand that overdose is a medical emergency and a powerful reminder of the urgent need for professional treatment. Our compassionate, expert-led programs provide the comprehensive care needed to address the root causes of substance use and build a foundation for lasting recovery.
Recognizing the Signs of Alcohol Overdose
Being able to recognize the signs of an overdose can mean the difference between life and death. Depending on the substance involved, overdose symptoms may include extreme drowsiness or loss of consciousness, slow, shallow, or stopped breathing, pinpoint or dilated pupils, bluish or grayish skin coloring particularly around the lips and fingertips, seizures, chest pain, rapid or irregular heartbeat, severe confusion or agitation, and unresponsiveness.
If you suspect someone is experiencing an overdose, call 911 immediately. If available and appropriate, administering naloxone (Narcan) can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. Stay with the person, keep them in a recovery position if possible, and continue to monitor their breathing until emergency services arrive.
Risk Factors and Prevention
Several factors increase the risk of alcohol overdose. Using after a period of abstinence, when tolerance has decreased, is one of the most dangerous situations. Mixing substances, particularly combining depressants such as opioids, benzodiazepines, and alcohol, dramatically increases overdose risk. Using alone, without anyone present who can call for help, also contributes to fatal outcomes.
Prevention begins with awareness and education, but ultimately, the most effective way to prevent overdose is to address the underlying addiction through professional treatment. Keystone Health Group offers medically supervised detox, individualized treatment planning, and a full continuum of care designed to help clients achieve and sustain meaningful recovery.
